Who Will Succeed Tom McEwen?

Profile By Bob Andelman

(Originally published in the Tampa Bay Life, 1989)

This month, Tom McEwen celebrates his 66th birthday
and the 30th anniversary of his arrival as a sports editor in
Tampa, a career that began with the now defunct Tampa Times
and for the last 27 years has been widely celebrated at the
Tampa Tribune.

One day, Tom will have to hang up his keyboard and --
like TV anchorman Hugh Smith did recently -- see a younger man
take his place. Hey, Tom! The question is who?

"We've had inquiries nationwide," acknowledges Joe
DeSalvo, the Tribune's executive sports editor. "It's one of
the burning questions among sports writers: 'When -- is -- Tom
going to retire?' There's a lot of people that would like the
position."

"I think Joe Henderson is being groomed for the part,"
offers Nanci Donnellan, host of WTKN radio's "Talkin' Sports."

"If I had a vote, I'd say Jim Selmon," suggests Andy
more

Hardy, sportscaster at WTVT Ch. 13. "Maybe they'll listen to
me."

Cedric Tallis, executive director of the Tampa Bay
Baseball Group, agrees with Hardy and Donnellan. "I think Joe
Henderson," he says. "Or it might be Jim Selmon."

"If they stay inside, Joe Henderson has always been an
aspirant for the position," according to Hubert Mizell, St.
Petersburg Times sports columnist.

Tedd Webb, host of WFLA radio's "Sports Huddle," thinks
Mizell would be the right man for the job. "Wouldn't it be
something," he asks, "if they offered him for job? Maybe he's
be tempted." Not likely, responds Mizell. "I can't imagine the
scenario that would make that a possibility."

For the most unlikely candidate, we turned to Mike
Servidio, sports writer at the Clearwater Sun, who nominated
Tampa Bay Bucs Coach Ray Perkins. "He'd put in exactly what he
wants people to read," says Servidio. "Wouldn't say a lot for
the credibility of the Trib, but Ray could say he actually
likes a newspaperman."

What does McEwen think of all this speculation? Let's
just say he plan to let it go on indefinitely.

"I don't have any plans to leave the job," he says. "The
newspaper is not interested in me quitting. While I don't
write well, I write a lot." Furthermore, he adds, "In recent
years I've come to a point where I can call on memory to be a
sports historian. It's a bit of a treasury to be able to do
that.

"Lord," he says, considering his own description of
editor-as-artifact, "I hope that isn't an indication of being
an old fart!"
